FOX 28 Political Analyst weighs in on Lugar Vs. Mourdock

Posted:

It's election eve.  Tomorrow's main event is the elder statesman trying to fend off a Tea Party favorite.  The Senate Republican Primary is the race to watch, not just in Indiana, but across the nation.

"It's a big, big deal," says FOX 28 Political Analyst Patrick Pierce.  But even political junkies like Pierce admit, they didn't see this coming.  "This is huge," Pierce says.  "This is something that folks all over the nation are looking at."

Pierce says Tea Party Challenger Richard Mourdock is poised to topple long time serving Indiana Senator Richard Lugar.  "It would be like Ted Kennedy losing the nomination to anyone in Massachusetts if he were still alive."

Pierce describes Lugar as a statesman, someone with a lot of foreign policy influence.  "There aren't that many people in the Senate anymore that folks think of in that way," Pierce says.

Lugar hasn't had to put up much of a fight in past elections, but right now he's is in the midst of a last minute ad blitz.  Recent polling shows him trailing Mourdock whose campaign is also taking to the airwaves in a big way.

Both are out shaking hands, speaking to crowds and trying to win over last minute votes.

Some have called this the political fight of Lugar's life.  Win, and he continues on as statesman.

Lose, and some say it will be one of the most shocking Senate Primary upsets.
