A standing room only crowd gathered at the Kroc Center in South Bend Tonight. Former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps drew up a game plan and called on the community to join his team in a major fight against violence. The 700 plus people crowded into the Kroc Center Auditorium to get fired up about Digger Phelps two-part plan.
First he wants he wants to recruit 500 new mentors. Coach Phelps says he's been basically putting together a team. He's been recruiting his captains, who joined them on stage. And with the community, Phelps says tonight's town hall meeting was their scrimmage before they take to the streets in the game against violence. But their first step, to recruit those 500 mentors to join the team. The second part of the plan, calling on each South Bend Common Council member to recruit and establish community watch groups.
And Phelps says he hopes to have those 500 mentors trained and ready to go by the beginning of next school year.
