The entire Woodland Elementary Community gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor 12-year-old Dajeianna Smith Monday.
They appropriately met on the softball fields where the little 12-year-old played.
She was killed while walking along the side of County Road 108 in Elkhart County last Wednesday. The driver of a pickup truck said he didn't see her and hit her.
Tonight, Smith's softball team posted a picture of her and a cross at first base and ran the bases in her honor.
The school's principal says she was a good student, involved in a lot of activities and it's been a difficult loss for many.
Smith's teammates say, "She meant a lot to us. She was a great teammate."
A family friend who identified herself as Grandma Kim says, "Many people, we miss her. We lose great person from America."
John Payne, the Principal Woodland Elementary says, "She was a wonderful, fun loving 5th grader here at Woodland Elementary School. The young lady had a passion for writing and she had really developed that craft over the last year."
There are no sidewalks in the area where Smith was killed and people who live nearby say people often speed in that area.
At this point, however, the driver in this case, has not been cited.
