Record-breaking heat the Sunday
before Memorial Day didn't stop people from being outside without air conditioning. Campers at Potato Creek
State Park said the heat
wasn't going to stop them from enjoying their holiday weekend.
Every campsite is full at Potato Creek
State park this Memorial
Day weekend. Camper Nate Koets and his
family had to make their reservations early.
"It's usually January when we try to
start thinking about them and planning them," said Koets. So nothing, not even uncomfortably high heat
could keep them away from their holiday weekend tradition. "We're out
here every memorial day weekend this is just our usual campsite," said Koets.
But it's not usually this hot
Memorial Day weekend. Camper Glen Blackburn said, "usually it's in the 80's but um
for some reason this weekend very warm." So this year people are especially thankful
for some trees on their campsite. "I'm glad we got a shaded site this year," said Koets.
But shade alone can't keep these
campers cool when the temperature is almost 100. Camper Steven King
said he and his family are drinking a lot of liquids and, " taking it easy in the shade."
Koets said his family is
also drinking, "plenty of drinks."
Hydration isn't the only thing water
is being used for Blackburn said all the women he was camping with were sitting, "with their feet in the pool." Blackburn
said the pool was brought to keep their dogs cool but it ended up keeping the
humans cool too.
Kids are also using the H2O for
water balloon fights and squirt gun fights.
So the heat can't dampen the fun and the real reason these campers have
chosen the outdoors as their place to celebrate the holiday weekend. "Rest and
relaxation. Get away from work," said
King.
