Students, faculty and staff held a
final tribute for St. Joseph's High School in South Bend Wednesday morning. The school will be closing its doors for good
as everyone moves into a brand new building in the fall.
Senior
Katelyn Przybylzkr
said, "today is actually pretty emotional.
I've been in this school for four years and I've really enjoyed the
atmosphere."
Students walked out of the building
for summer break Wednesday knowing they wouldn't be coming back. Students have been learning in the old
building on Michigan Street
for 59 years and that's why they couldn't leave without a goodbye. There's a lot they'll miss about the old
building. Junior Connor Edmonds said, "the gym that's what I'm gonna miss." "The pep
rally's in the gym. Oh there's so many
memories," said Przybylzkr. And Freshman
Meredith Laderer said, "just the tradition
I'm gonna miss the history of the building."
To say goodbye a tribute ceremony was
held on the football field. Past principals
shared their memories and members of the football team led students in the
school fight song.
Everyone wore matching t shirts with
a picture of the old building on the front and the new building on the back.
While there are tons of memories at
the old school students said there's a lot to look forward to at the new
location. "We
get to start our own traditions," said Laderer. And Edmonds said, "I'm
super excited about it, especially the tunnel down from the locker room to the
field." Freshman Colleen Denunzio
said she's excited the new building will have air conditioning.
No final word yet on when classes
will begin in the new building.
Principal Susan Richter said the construction of the new school on Notre Dame Avenue
is going well but they won't have a set start date for next school year until
later in the summer. "We're hoping it'll either be the end of August or the
first part of September right after Labor Day.
Again it's all contingent on when construction is going to finish," said
Richter.
Richter said you can stay updated on
the progress by visiting the school's web site. http://www.stjoe.k12.in.us/
That's where they'll post all the
important dates.
