South Bend Common Council Vice-President Oliver Davis has formally requested access to the police phone recordings involved in the recently concluded federal investigation.
The official request asks for:
- Copies of any and all tapes related to the Mayor's news releases of March 29th & March 30th regarding the demotion of former Police Chief Darryl Boykins; as well as the tapes which were cited by the Mayor in the termination of Communications Director Karen DePaepe.
- Copies of any and all contracts or agreements addressing the hiring of the Mayor's Special Legal Council.
- Total amount of monies paid to date and the sources of such payments used for the payment of the Mayor's Special Legal Counsel, along with invoices for such payments.
Davis says they are not using this as part of an impeachment process in any way. The council is not commenting on Citizens for Better Government's call for the mayor to step down.
Davis said in a press conference Friday afternoon that they simply want to get to the truth, and understanding of what's happened and the legal process behind the issues. He says they want to gather information without an attack.
