The Bethel softball program says good bye to coach Anna Welsh this summer. The three time conference coach of the year led the Pilots to 6 Mid-Central College Conference championships, the 2007 NCCAA National Title and the highest NAIA ranking in program history.
Welsh leaves the program with a 330-98-and-1 record in 8 Seasons. But Welsh's legacy in Michiana goes beyond Bethel, reaching out into the community.
Three years ago, former Bethel softball coach Anna Welsh and former Washington coach Seabe Gavin started a free camp at the Martin Luther King Center in South Bend.
Welsh has watched the camp flourish with a record 160 girls on the first day, but they say kids can still come out and participate throughout the week. Ages range from 7-to-14 years old. It's an opportunity that keeps players coming back year-after-year.
The camp is about more than just softball, they are also doing a canned food drive for the Northern Indiana Food Bank.
But this will be Welsh's final summer in South Bend. She will coach at Southeastern in Florida next season. With this being her last camp, the staff wanted to let her know how much she has meant to the program.
They surprised her with a special recognition, showing their appreciation for her dedication to the community.
