You may have looked at your calendar and thought it's June 16th, but did you also know that it's Juneteenth?
The day celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S.
South Bend's 13th annual Juneteenth celebration was held in Lasalle Park Saturday.
There was music and food and six $500 scholarships were given out.
Local unsung heroes were also honored and a community forum got people talking.
"We need to evaluate where we're going we need to discuss what it is happening in out community. We need to emphasize the importance of education. We need to continue to support each other," says Juneteenth Committee Chair, Rose Clark.
Juneteenth was first celebrated on June 19, 1865 when the final slaves were made aware of their freedom.
