South Bend peregrine falcon dies

Posted:

A peregrine falcon that graced the skies of South Bend for nearly a decade has died from a head injury that he likely suffered while hunting.

The South Bend Tribune reports that Zephyr was found on the ground Tuesday with a bloody beak and appearing dazed.

Raptor rehabilitator Carol Riewe says he died later at a local animal clinic.

The 13-year-old raptor and his mate, Guinevere, have nested in downtown South Bend since 2003. They produced three chicks in May, but only one has survived.

Zephyr lost his right foot to an apparent trap in 2011 but had continued to hunt.
