An early morning crash on Wednesday leaves a truck driver serious injured. The accident happened on I-80 just east of Cline Avenue in Lake County.
An off-duty police officer had pulled over a suspected impaired driver when a trash hauler semi-truck came upon the traffic stop. The driver tried to avoid hitting the police car by changing lanes when his truck was hit by another semi.
The driver of the other semi, 50-year-old Dennis Shulze from Wisconsin, was pinned inside his cab. Emergency responders got him out, and he was airlifted to the hospital with "life-threatening injuries" according to the Indiana State Police.
The suspected impaired driver, 21-year-old Ronald Blankenship of Gary, was taken to the Lake County Jail and is facing a charge of Operating While Intoxicated Refusal.
