A 19-year-old man is in a local hospital after being shot by a Michigan City Police officer Wednesday night.
It happened after a routine traffic stop just before 6:00 p.m. on Welnetz Road. Police say they pulled over a 2011 Chevy Malibu for a traffic violation. There were four people inside and officers say Daniel Sharrod got out of the car and took off on foot.
An officer caught up with Sharrod at a nearby apartment complex and reports the man tried to take his gun. When the officer gained control he shot Sharrod in the stomach. Sharrod allegedly kept running for a quarter mile before being found near a friend's apartment on Dody Street. He was airlifted to a local hospital where was in serious condition at last report.
The officer, Patrolman Ron Skibins, was not injured. He's been placed on paid administrative leave, which is a Michigan City Police Department policy in this situation. Investigators will take a look at the case before turning it over to the LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office, which will take action. Until then, the officer's name is not being released.
