South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is responding to allegations of racism made against him in legal documents.
Buttigieg is responding to a tort claim filed by South Bend's former police chief Darryl Boykins. Boykins says his demotion to captain back in March was racially motivated.
The Mayor could not say much about the issue due to the possible litigation but says the allegation is untrue.
The Mayor says he's proud of the diversity in South Bend. "You know I'm proud of the diversity of the Mayor's office and I believe the diversity of the city is one of its strengths.
Buttigieg added that he hires the best person for the job because that's what he owes the citizens of South Bend.
