Friday night a car versus pick up truck accident sent the pick up truck into a house near Chapin and Catalpa streets in South Bend and caused a gas leak. South Bend Fire Department Battalion Chief Carl Buchanon said the pick up truck may have lost control and went into the house. When the pick up truck hit the house it also hit the gas meter, exposing it. Buchanon said when crews arrived on scene they heard gas spewing out so they evacuated a two block radius around the house.
Another driver distracted by all of this hit a child in the area. Buchanon said he was told there was an accident involving a child but was not sure the extent of the child's injuries. He said one of the units did transport the child to the hospital.
Buchanon called the gas leak "a very dangerous situation."
Shortly after 10 p.m. NIPSCO said everything was clear and those who were evacuated were allowed back into their homes. Power had also been shut off in the area and was turned back on around 10:30 p.m.
