Two dead in fiery crash

Posted:

Police say an habitual traffic offender caused a deadly crash in North Liberty Saturday night.

It happened in the 64,000 block of State Road 23.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department says 34 year-old Jeremy Lawton of South Bend was headed northbound on SR 23 when he attempted to pass a vehicle and then struck an on-coming car.

Lawton's car burst into flames.

The driver of the car Lawton hit, 69 year-old James Menges, was dead when rescue crews arrived.

Crews pulled Lawton from his burning vehicle and tried to save his life without success.

The Sheriff's Department says Lawton was an habitual traffic violator and didn't have a valid drivers license.
