It's been 13 years since a South Bend intern was killed during a traffic accident while working at a construction site.
Monday, his family and the city, kept his memory alive by awarding the scholarship in his name.
Marci Sears says, "We're also greatly comforted by the consistent and dedicated effort of the city of South Bend to not only keep current safety practices in place but to continually seek additional ways to make employees safer in their workday responsibilities.
Marci Sears presented Mara Paluszewski as this year's Sears scholarship winner.
She's doing a second internship with the city with the city's Engineering Department.
She wrote the winning saying she's heard many stories about Evan and seen the cities commitment to safety.
Paluszewski says, "We go through training and we have safety vests and hard hats and I mean even when we walk out the door, the secretaries are always saying, 'Be safe out there!' Safety is their number one concern."
Mara will be a junior in Purdue's Industrial Engineering program in the Fall.
