With the 4th of July next Wednesday,
many people might not be thinking about fireworks just yet but your local fire
department is.
They say people will be celebrating
this weekend and next weekend and they want to make sure you are up to date on
your firework safety.
Remember to leave enough space for
the fireworks to go off without hitting anything or anyone. The most common
firework injuries are to the hands and the eyes. Before you even shoot off your
first firework, water down the area where you plan to ignite the fireworks.
Fire officials suggest setting up
your fireworks on grass instead of a paved area because there is less of a risk
of the explosives bouncing or spinning. Also, make sure to have a hose ready, especially
this year.
"We've had already like 47
grass fires since the first of May to now," said South Bend Fire Marshal Federico Rodruiguez. "For one reason or another and it
doesn't take very much for grass fires to start up."
In addition to safety, you'll also
want to brush up on fireworks laws. In most cities in Michiana, you can only
shoot off fireworks at a certain time.
