As the heat goes up this week in Elkhart County the health department wants to remind the public how to prevent illness and injury.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests:
- Avoid hot foods and heavy meals
- Drink plenty of fluids and replace salts and minerals in your body
- Dress infants and children in cool, loose clothing and protect them from direct sun
- Limit sun exposure particularly during the mid-day hours
- Do not leave infants, children or pets in a parked car
- Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets
Warnings signs of heat stroke include all of the following:
- A high body temperature, for example, above 103 degrees F
- A lack of sweating
- A rapid, strong pulse
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Confusion
- Unconsciousness
Keep a close eye on those at high risk:
- Infants and children
- People 65 years of age or older
- People who are overweight
- People who over exert themselves during work or exercise
- People who are already physically ill
