South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will join Police Chief Chuck Hurley as the police department opens its downtown sub-station, which will be in a storefront at 119 South Michigan Street. There will be a grand opening ceremony at noon on Thursday.
Mayor Buttigieg says this sub-station will help the police department better serve the city.
"The sub-station will be open to all South Bend residents to learn more about crime prevention and being safe," he said. "Residents and business owners can also find information about invents happening around the city, especially downtown.
"It will bring more police presence to the downtown area and promote increased safety through events, tutorials, partnerships with DTSB, and the sharing of information."
People will also be able to pick up literature on crime prevention as well as identification and finger printing for children. But its main function will be a base for police assigned to the downtown area.
"The officers have aces to the computer system where crime reports can be input onsite where officers will not have to return to the main station for reporting," said Hurley.
