Weather conditions cancel fireworks

First Marshall County, now the City of Elkhart. The 44th of July fireworks have been canceled in the city of Elkhart for this year. More and more fireworks shows are being canceled because of the dry conditions.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore announced Thursday that due to the high temperatures and dry grass, it could put the Elkhart Community School's property and surrounding neighborhoods at risk of catching fire.

"Basically what it comes down to is, we are entrusted to, for public safety. And that goes for the people themselves, plus the property they own." Mayor Moore said.

According to the mayor, the United States Army Field Band volunteers are still planning to perform on the 4th of July at McNaughton Park Band Shell at 7:00 p.m.

Marshall County Commissioners voted to ban public firework displays as well. However the Town of Bremen has decided to go ahead with their show according to the town's Director of Operation Rich Martin.

"We've done our homework and we're comfortable with our equipment and our water source that we'll be able to handle it if an event arises. Bremen's not throwing caution to the wind here, they're taking all the precautionary steps to make sure it's a safe event." Martin said.
