Prosecutors have filed charges against a man arrested for Thursday's double shooting in South Bend.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide arrested 24-year-old Steven Nobles in connection to the crime. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office says Reckless Homicide and Criminal Recklessness charges were filed against Nobles on Friday.
On Thursday night, police say Fred Smith and Diana Pereira were shot in the 400 block of South Edison Street. Smith died at the scene, Pereira was taken to the hospital.
According to court documents, Nobles told police at the scene he was the one who shot Smith. During an interview, investigators say Nobles told them he and Smith were friends, but had been fighting recently. Investigators say Nobles told them Smith approached him several times, the last time Nobles says he fired his gun at the ground several times. Investigators say Nobles told them he wasn't shooting at Smith, but admits one of his shots did hit Pereira, Nobles' wife.
Nobles is being held at the Saint Joseph County Jail on a $5000 cash bond.
