Things just got a little less smoky in Indiana. A statewide smoking ban went into effect Sunday.
The ban includes all public areas and workplaces. It excludes bars and clubs. Businesses like Between the Buns in Granger are now smoke-free. The restaurant used to allow smoking in the bar area, but because it's not an 18 and up club the entire building had to go smoke-free.
We spoke with customer there Sunday who tell us there are perks to smoke free air but they don't agree with a statewide ban.
Lou Lawton/Non-Smoker "I'm not for it I don't like the smoking but if it's blocked off like this why not? It's not affecting anybody out there," said non-smoker Lou Lawton. Smoker, Chip Basney, said, "Do I love the cleaner air and kid friendly area? Yes, I think that's great but I don't think you should be able to tell somebody how to run their business."
The City of South Bend is looking at an even more restrictive ban that wouldn't allow smoking in bars or club. Council members could vote on that on July 9th.
