The lead sponsor of an ordinance to increase restrictions on
smoking in South Bend
is asking the Common Council to delay action on the proposal. The ordinance was on the council's agenda for Monday.
In a
letter Thursday, Councilwoman Valerie Schey asked to delay action until July
23. Schey says she and her co-sponsors are working with departments that would
be responsible for enforcing the ban. She says their goal is to provide an implementation
plan to ensure a smooth transition for all parties involved.
The proposed South
Bend ordinance would include bars and taverns, which
are not covered in the statewide ban which took effect July 1.
