Danger lurks beneath and we're not talking about a shark named Jaws! We're talking about rip currents. You probably noticed the much more tolerable temps Sunday. The cold front that moved through Saturday, brought a shift in winds and a high risk for rip currents.
Ralph Rausch brought his family to Silver Beach
Sunday. "They're
visiting here from Colorado Springs
and wanted to see the waves," said Rausch. They got just that. In fact the waves were bigger than normal. And while its fun for the kids to see it
brings with it the dangerous rip currents.
"People will still go out there and they'll
go out too far get caught in one of the rip tides and they'll get carried out
maybe panic or they get carried out so far they can't make it back. It's sad to see," said Rausch. He has been hearing those types of stories
for years so he knows how to keep his family safe when swimming conditions are
not ideal. "Explained
the situation to the kids here and we keep counting heads. And we don't let em get out too far," said
Rausch
Good advice that not everyone has
been following. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary
rescued seven swimmers in Lake Michigan Saturday Evening. Lifeguards at Silver Beach
said they haven't had major issues but they are on high alert. Head Lifeguard Alexandra
Foster said, "We pay extra attention to small children or people who look
like they might have trouble."
To keep yourself safe in the waters lifeguards say always swim with a buddy, know how to swim, and swim near a lifeguard. If you do get caught in a rip current swim parallel to the shore.
