Firefighters responded to a fire at McKinley just west of Capitol Avenue Monday.
Crews were called just after noon to the Lebermuth Company.
According to the company's web site, they make fragrances, flavors and essential oils.
Fire crews from several area fire departments, including South Bend, Mishawaka and Clay Township were on the scene.
The building was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Lebermuth employee Alen Brown said,"We're just so blessed that everybody's ok, no one was injured."
Workers say a big stainless steel fragrance tank caught fire.
"It was just black smoke, lots and lots of black smoke and very hot. It was very hot," said Lebermuth Employee David Shebell.
A Haz-Mat team was on scene because of the chemicals present.
"It's one of those buildings that you hope you never get a call for a fire, just knowing there are a lot of dangerous chemicals here," said Penn Township Assistant Fire Chief John Snyder.
McKinley was shut down as firefighters tried to keep water and chemicals from getting into the sewer system.
The owner tells us that they plan to continue operations in Bremen.
