It's just another example of how dangerously dry it is outside. Firefighters from Penn, Clay and Cleveland Township battled a field fire just behind houses near Brems Court. Firefighters say they believe the blaze started as a result of firework debris.
The dry conditions and wind propelled the fire to nearly 15 foot flames. And stopped just feet in front of neighbor's houses. Much in part because of their efforts with garden houses battling the fire from their own backyards. They say when they saw the smoke pouring into the streets they thought a house was on fire.
Again, firefighters say they think this was caused by fireworks. And neighbors say they actually heard the fireworks going off but didn't think anything off it until they saw the field on fire. Now there was no fireworks ban in St. Joseph County at the time of the fire, however it is now illegal in Indiana to shoot off fireworks until 10 AM on December 31st.
