Teachers knew the vote was coming. But that didn't make it any easier. The School Board is facing a big budget deficit and so tonight they passed a reduction that eliminated 48 positions.
SBCSC's Superintendent Dr. Carole Schmidt says some of these cuts are a direct result of a decline in student enrollment throughout the corporation. But she also adds that she believes part of that decline is a direct result of the state's waiver program. She says it's that legislation that was passed in Indiana, to go for the waiver and get the state out of the No Child Left Behind program that has added to the losses.
Dr. Schmidt hopes that these cuts aren't permanent. She says when the state refigures the way they grade the ISTEP testing, they may have a better idea of where the corporation sits in terms of funding.
