A former nursing home housing migrant workers in South Bend was the topic of conversation at a common council meeting Tuesday night. They were talking about a property on West Western that was said to have code violations.
Migrant workers there believed they were being kicked out, but the city came up with an agreement that will benefit migrant families and also protects the city.
"To look at how we, as a city, can be more welcoming to our migrant families, in looking at our city codes, wellness plan and everything else and looking at what caused this problem. How we can solve it better and what we can do in the future to make sure our migrant families are looked at and their wellness and protection are provided for," said Councilman Oliver Davis.
A short term agreement calls for an off-duty firefighter to be hired to be on the location 24-7 because the building doesn't have a sprinkler system in the event of a fire.
