The Elkhart County Fair is growing. They've expanded the grounds by more then 200 acres this year. And all of it was definitely in use Sunday as tens of thousands of people showed up for a day of free admission.
And they've all got their favorite part about the fair. Jacob Edwards said he likes, "the baby animals." While Taylor Miller likes, "the food and getting to see a lot of people."
On Sunday there were definitely plenty of people to see. Tim Yoder with the Elkhart County 4-H Fair said, "every Sunday of the fair is free and it's one of the busier days."
There's no official numbers yet but this Sunday could be one of the busiest ever since the fair grounds can now accommodate more people. "The community jumped in and helped us and we were able to expand our fair grounds by 253 acres," said Yoder. So there's now more fair to enjoy including food and parking.
And another new addition, trams that make it easier to transport people around the expanded fairgrounds. "We realize that as we're getting bigger and it's important that not only are we moving cars but we're able to accommodate moving people," said Yoder.
Even though the fair already has a reputation for being one of the biggest in the nation everyone is on board with growing and having the space to welcome more attendees.
"I think it's good I think it's really good for the fair and will give us a bigger turnout," said Miller.
And Mike Hertsell with the Elkhart County Farm Bureau said, "I think with the new land it'll help preserve the Elkhart County Fair here for our kids and the next generation to come." So those future generations can continue to learn about agriculture, enjoy some cotton candy, and everything else the event offers.
The fair continues until Saturday July 28th.
