Colorado mass shooting prompts gun control debate

Posted:

The deadly movie theatre shooting in Colorado is once again bringing up the gun control debate.

We wanted to see exactly what gun laws are in Michiana.

In Indiana and Michigan you have to pass a federal background check to buy a gun.

But getting a permit to carry a weapon is a different process.

Indiana is a "shallow issue" state, meaning all a resident has to do it fill out an application and pass a background check with the state.

In Michigan, applicants have to meet with a gun board.

They also have to take a pistol training course, and they have to be registered to vote in Michigan too.

Gun stores say they take selling weapons seriously.

Midwest Gun Exchange in Mishawaka says it works close will police and can refuse to sell guns if they suspect anything dangerous.

"It happens quite often as a matter of fact. In a store of this size and volume, I'd say more here than other places, do we see something that causes concern and we make the call," says Brad Rupert with Midwest Gun Exchange.

As far as the types of guns people can get a carry permit: in Michigan, automatic weapons of any kind are illegal.

In Indiana, licensed gun owners can carry any type of handgun.

In both states, Michigan and Indiana, if a person is convicted of a misdemeanor domestic battery charge,  their permit will be revoked.

In Michigan, there are a number of misdemeanors that keep you from getting a carry permit.

For instance, if you get an OWI, you can't get a permit for three years.
