South Bend police say an initial investigation indicates mechanical failure didn't cause a dune buggy to go out of control and crash during a race at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds.
Sgt. Gene Eyester says officers now are investigating what other factors might have contributed to the fatal crash, including whether improved safety measures could have helped. He says the main goal is to ensure another fatal crash like that doesn't happen again.
An autopsy showed 48-year-old Steven DeLeeuw of West Olive, Mich., died Saturday night of blunt force trauma to the head and chest. Authorities say the vehicle flipped several times and crashed into a concrete barrier and chain-link fence at the fairgrounds.
