Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese have been suspended for the season opener. The two will not travel with the team to Ireland when the Irish take on Navy on September 1st.
This has a major impact on the 4-way quarterback battle.
Tommy is the only QB with starting experience. In 16 games, he threw for more than 39-hundred yards with 32 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He is 12-4 as a starter.
This suspension drops him from competing for the starting job, down to third string where he will have to fight his way back up.
Andrew Hendrix has some experience. In two games, he threw for 249 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions along with one rushing TD.
Everett Golson impressed at this year's spring game. While Freshman Gunner Kiel has no experience, but is the top rated quarterback out of high school.
A lot rides on how the new starter plays in the opener, whether or not Rees will be able to over-throw him to win back the starting job.
