South Bend Police say they will continue increased walking patrols because they appear to be getting pretty positive results. The initiative started in early April.
The patrols take place during the day shift and cover all areas of the city. Ten to 12 officers on different beats have been taking part.
They get out there and walk at least 15 minutes per shift in their assigned areas to get to know the people they serve.
"We try to build a trust with the citizens and police officers. People think we're more human when you're walking by," says Lt. Joseph Gale. "We're more easily approachable by citizens and they talk about their area's problems.
So far the program has helped police catch fugitives and it's generated tips and leads.
Aside from all that officers are getting some great exercise.
