Firefighters in South Bend responded to a blaze on the city's west side Friday
It happened at a vacant home on the 1400 block of Phillipa Street right around 3:45 a.m. Firefighters tell FOX 28 neighbors told them the house was vacant when they got there, but they still performed a routine search and rescue.
The house was being renovated at the time and was fully furnished. Firefighters say the owner lives just down the street.
Battalion chief Carl Buchanon says most of the damage was contained to one area of the house.
"Lots of visible charring and a lot of heavy flames on that second floor so definitely some interior damage on that second floor for sure," he said.
There is no word on a cause this morning.
