Women's shelter sees spike after recent slayings

The recent slayings of a Lapel woman and a Pendleton bystander in domestic-related shootings has created a surge of new clients at an Anderson women's shelter.

The Alternatives Inc. shelter went from about 30 beds occupied in May to 45 in early August following the June 9 shotgun slaying of 31-year-old Amanda Wiles, allegedly by her mother's ex-boyfriend, and the July 26 shooting of 48-year-old John Neal Shull Jr. of Pendleton during a confrontation between a man and his estranged wife.

Alternatives victim's advocate Kandi Floyd says she received 12 new clients in the week following Wiles' death. She says her phone hasn't stopped ringing since the shooting in nearby Pendleton the following month.
