UPDATE: Police say death of Warsaw child an accident

Posted:

Warsaw Police say they believe the death of an 18-month-old child on Monday was an accident.

Police say they got a call about an unresponsive child at a babysitter's house in the 900-block of South Union Street at 1:39 p.m. Monday. The young boy, Payton Brettell, was taken to a Warsaw hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 p.m.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday afternoon in Fort Wayne. According to police, the preliminary results showed Brettell's death was accidental due to positional asphyxia.

Police say while they don't believe foul play is involved, the case remains under investigation by Warsaw Police, the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office and Child Protective Services.
