A pile of tires posed a big challenge for fire crews on Wednesday. A pile of tires caught fire at Liberty Tire Recycle in North Liberty around 11:30am.
They brought in 12 departments for help and say they had to use foam due to the special nature of a rubber fire.
A neighbor nearby was working on his car when he came out and saw the flames. "It looked pretty dangerous. It was pretty tall. It was probably one of the tallest fires I've ever seen personally," said witness Jordan Williams.
State Road 23 just south of town was closed for about a block to both northbound and southbound traffic while crews fought the fire. It took about an hour to get everything under control. No one was hurt in the fire.
