We've had a lot of fun this year. We were down 4 strokes early and battled to be tied after 9. Then we had a 10 midway through the back 9, but we were still only behind by 2 coming into the final hole.
We thought it appropriate to play a couple of Notre Dame football players as the season gets ready to kick off. Only time will tell if this round proves to be momentum for a great year for the Irish in 2012.
The 414 yard hole #18, the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame is special. Tight, lots of bunkers, high rough, and when you play a couple potential football All-Americans, it adds one more element.
The Challengers teed of first. Braxton's a big boy - 6'3" 304 lbs. He hits a long low line, but we hadn't seen long yet. Tyler Eifert is 6'6" and 251 lbs. He's also a 4 handicap. Watch and listen to the punishment he gives this golf ball.
It measured 355 yards, unreal. He hit it so far that they stopped play on the course for 5 to 10 minutes, because of electricity in the air. Some thought it was lightning, but that was wonderboy's drive.
We knew going in we were down 2, so when play resumed, we tried to catch up. My drive went a measly 220 yards, so we were 195 away.
The 5 wood felt good, right on it. No, over the top. So we would have to hit through a tree to get back in play. We were sitting 3 and still off the dance floor.
Meanwhile, the Irish turned their brawn into finesse. Brax was on, so was Tyler. They're sitting a solid 2 on, while we're 3 and off. So, Alli put us on with a chip - That's 4.
Then we try to putt in for bogey - We'll see if Miss Hayes can go to school to get our 5.
We take a 6. Now it's just a matter of how bad we lose by.
Here come the Irish. The pride of Penn High School, Center Braxton Cave puts it in the center of the cup - That's a birdie 3, and a 3 stroke victory.
For the season, we lose by 5. What a year, and thanks to all of our challengers. We'll see you next season.
