Northridge High School students receive laptops

Posted:

It's time to ditch the paper and pencils. Northridge High School students are upgrading.

"I'm very excited. I'm so happy our school is finally advancing," says student Megan Clouse.

Advancing to laptops.

"It's pretty exciting, it's my first laptop personally," says student CHeyenne Petty.

Technology director, Susan Parker was part of the laptop discussion when it started two years ago and says, "It's the 21st century, we're trying to prepare students for a world that's going to be digital."

Parker says this is the best way for students to learn.

"Education will become more individualized and students can move more at their own pace."

Every student is receiving a new laptop this school year.

"It's pretty cool because you have less books to carry around. It's a lot easier for people who don't have computer access at home and stuff like that. So it would be a lot easier to do your homework," Janelle Pettifor.

"I think it will positively impact the school year and make it easier to get work done," says Clouse.

An orientation is required first before students can get their hands on one of the 1,300 laptops. Even parents are excited.

"Information is limitless and the web can do that for you, books can't really do that for you," says Northridge parent, Cheryl Lawrence.

"Our computer is not up to date like the school's are so she was having issues as far as using our computer. So I'm hoping that having this computer will help her," says parent Tammy Clouse.

For a parent the cost stays about the same, before they'd have to pay up to 75-dollars for "The student is paying back not quite half the cost of the machine and the corporation is picking up the rest," says Northridge principle Gerald Rasler.

Picking up a cost that principle Gerald Rasler believes is well worth it.

"A student gets two things. One, they can interact with their teacher digitally back and forth immediately. Also, it does open up the world for them in every class."

When school starts next week... you can bet classrooms will look a little different at Northridge.
