A violent start to a sleepy Sunday morning in South Bend.
Two people are dead, in a shootout on the city's west side.
Police say it all happened around 10a.m. in the 1600 block of Olive Street.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander, Tim Corbett says one person was found dead outside a home and the other was found in a nearby alley.
What investigators say the suspect did next, forced officers into action.
"The suspect came out of the house with two handguns, one in each hand and he began shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect numerous times," says Corbett.
The suspect is in the hospital in critical condition.
Residents of the neighborhood were asked to stay inside their homes while police blocked off the area.
Neighbors we spoke with didn't want to talk on camera but say the suspect wasn't going down easy.
Autopsy results for the victims aren't expected until Tuesday.
