Council members were busy tonight debating a proposed trash fee.
Mayor Dick Moore is asking the city to approve the fee of 11 dollars and 35 cents per month. He says the city is looking for a way to battle a big budget deficit. He proposes that folks living in the city pay a trash pick up fee, but many residents aren't happy about it!
"Elkhart still has taxpayers who are under employed or struggling to may payments on bills already. The council and administration needs to look at this much harder before they implement a new tax on the people of Elkhart," says resident Brian Dickerson.
"I think it's important that we can do well and still not have to be raising costs for folks who are trying their best to do well by the city as well as their families," says Dave Blessing.
The council voted to continue to look into the proposal. It will be revisited and could be voted on next Monday.
