They warned they might. Monday night they followed through. The South Bend Common Council voted 8-to-1 to subpoena the now infamous tapes.
The recordings were made within the South Bend Police Department. They were at the center of an FBI investigation that eventually lead to the demotion of former South Bend Police Chief Daryl Boykins.
Many in the community have rallied behind the former SBPD Chief, saying he should have kept his job.
There has also been a ground-swell of voices urging the city to release the tapes.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg says the vote to subpoena is a positive thing. He says it puts it on a path to court. "I've said all along I'm not comfortable doing something when reasonable people disagree about whether it's a felony, but one way to get a good green light for that would be if there's a court order backing the subpoena," Buttigieg says.
