A Berrien County hotel was evacuated late Tuesday night after a fire broke out in the laundry room.
It happened at the Holiday Inn Express on Moore Drive in Niles. Firefighters tell FOX 28 it started when a load of laundry caught fire in a dryer.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to just the dryer, but they say it could've been much worse if not for the quick thinking of hotel employees.
"The staff found it, hit it with a dry chemical fire extinguisher, knocked it down, noticed that it was starting to flame up again," said Niles Township Fire Chief Gary Brovold. "They hit it again and meanwhile they called the fire department and they were starting to clear the rooms.
"If they hadn't found it and it went out of the dryer it could've extended."
No customers, staff or firefighters reported any injuries resulting from the blaze.
