School funding doesn't keep pace with growth

A southwestern Indiana school district says changes in the state's school funding formula aren't keeping pace with the district's growth.

North Knox Superintendent Darrel Bobe says the district expects to have more students next year. He says that should mean more money under changes lawmakers approved to the school funding formula so that money follows the student.

But Bobe says his district of about 1,300 students instead is looking at a $144,000 drop in state aid.

Bobe says the state is trying to equalize support among districts by taking away money from districts like North Knox that traditionally received more in per-student aid than other nearby districts.

He says the cuts could affect the district's ability to reward teachers for high performance.
