There's at least one thing Elkhart leaders can agree on, something has to be done to reduce the city's deficit.
Beyond that, this is looking like a big budget battle!
Moore is proposing $1.6 million in spending cuts.
That's to help make up for 10.5 million dollars in lost property tax revenue.
Common Council members aren't exactly seeing eye to eye on where to cut.
Moore's proposal includes layoffs, and letting now open positions, stay that way.
It also includes furlough days for 600 employees including police and firefighters
Moore says a trash fee, voted down by the council, could have avoided the cuts.
Other areas that would see decreased funding if the packages passes, include: the Economic Development Corporation, Downtown Elkhart, and the Chamber of Commerce Incubator Program.
But some council members say there's a different way to save money.
Council member David Henke says some departments can be outsourced, and the city can collect on debts.
Judging from some clashing during Monday's meeting, budget hearings are sure to get heated.
Hearings begin Tuesday, September 18th at 6pm at Elkhart City Hall.
