Cities re-name roads Fighting Irish Drive

A little football game is getting a whole lot of attention this week.

Maybe you've heard of the two schools, Notre Dame and Michigan.

When Big Blue comes to town this weekend, they'll see something a little different.

Instead of Michigan Street, South Bend has renamed the road to Fighting Irish Drive for the week.

The signage change had been planned for sometime, and after 3 wins, they thought the timing was better than ever.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg says the city has a lot of respect for Michigan but certainly wanted to support the Notre Dame team.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says, "I often say that the Notre Dame football team is the most important economic development that we don't control through policy. So, we're certainly cheering for Notre Dame to have more and more favorable attention on our community."

The city of Mishawaka jumped on that band wagon, too.

Mayor Dave Wood unveiled "Fighting Irish Drive" at one of the busiest corners of the city, Main Street and Douglas.

The Mayor says they felt this was appropriate considering the impact Notre Dame and Notre Dame football has on Mishawaka.

Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood says, "They are known not only around this city and this region, but they're known around the world and so we think it's one of our great economic development partners, the University of Notre Dame and we want to encourage that's promote that and partner in that in any way we can."

Mayor Wood says the more excitement generated by the team, the more economic impact is seen by local businesses.

Representatives from Notre Dame were on hand at both unveilings.
