Low income families have a new opportunity to find affordable housing thanks to an effort by the South Bend Heritage Foundation and a $6 million federal tax credit.
The massive project near Ivy Tech Community College began in the Spring of 2011 and concluded Thursday with the unveiling of a 54 unit housing development.
Heritage Homes Southeast, as the development is called, offers homes with new roofs, flooring, water conserving bathroom fixtures and Energy Star furnaces, air conditioners and appliances.
Even the new leasing office and resident meeting space is part of the renovation effort. The building is a repurposed abandoned home.
