One in four kids in our community doesn't know where their next meal is going to come from.
That was a startling statistic unveiled at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Thursday.
But with the start of school, there is help on the way. Students at South Bend Community School Corporation who qualify, will get "Food 4 Kids Fun Packs" this school year.
They and 1,125 students in the Food Bank's six-county service area will qualify.
Kids in grades K-6 will get a bag of food for every weekend and holiday break, when they aren't at school for lunch.
Jordan Automotive was the major sponsor donating 40-thousand dollars.
Superintendent Dr. Carol Schmidt of the South Bend School Corporation says, "It's with great appreciation and gratitude that I'm here today because without the proper nutrition, children's little brains don't function at high levels."
Jordan has been the major sponsor of the program since 2009 but it's also funded by personal donations, sponsorships and grants.
The program used to be called "Backpacks 4 Kids."
