The Seed to Feed program is reaping the benefits with a great harvest. Church Community Services in Elkhart is starting to harvest crops members planted earlier this year. They'll all eventually wind up at their food pantry.
The crops include corn, soybeans, potatoes and tomatoes. All the crops were made possible by donors in the community.
Executive Director Rod Roberson says there are a lot of potatoes to harvest. "We've shared the potatoes, 5,200 pounds in our last picking, and we're going to have more today," Roberson said. "We intend to share those throughout the pantries within Elkhart County."
We caught up with James Miller at the food pantry. "It keeps me from starving," he said. "I was on unemployment for two years and I come in every month. They help me quite a bit."
The organization is looking to expand next year. They want to go from 70 to 700 acres and to move into livestock.
They already got a head start when one heifer was donated Wednesday.
