Technology is changing the shopping experience

Posted:

Technology changes the way we do a lot of things, especially the way we shop. As we head into the holiday season, stores like Meijer and Target are using technology to give customers a quick and convenient shopping experience.

"Technology is a game changer," says Target store manager, Bryan Schiff.

New at Target is wireless internet, so customers can learn more about products and compare prices while they shop.

"We're limited in space on what we can teach or show you in our store. So the Smart Phone is kind of that accessory to gain knowledge," says Schiff.

Customers can now scan products with smart phones and it will go straight to Target.com to find out more information or order the product. But Target's not the only store with tricks up their sleeve this season.

Meijer has "M Perks" for customers.

"There's going to be some great deals that if they go online they'll get a special deal that they won't get in the store," says store director Rick Zeeff.

You can also learn about products online and have coupons sent to your phone to use at check out.

"The more information they have, we feel they will be happy with us," says Zeeff.

Small, locally owned businesses are taking a different approach.

"I don't think there's any program, any app, that's worked as well as a happy customer who tells another person," says Marlene Hollenkamp, owner of Imagine That!

Imagine That! has a website, but Hollenkamp says it's not for shopping.

"This is not a venue that relies on technology. Our underlying purpose of being here is to help people and interact with them."

Online, customers can see what new items are so they're informed when they walk in the door. Hollenkamp doesn't try to compete with stores like Meijer and Target. She says she has items that they don't have.

"I make an effort to put ourselves into a different category."

The approach at every store is different and so are the customers.

"I'm old school, I go to the store," says Andrew Burke.

"It's more relaxing because I don't have to fight the crowds, plus I have four kids and I can do it at home," says Jenny Brunner, an online shopper.

Whichever you prefer, there will be something for everyone this holiday season.
