Police have released the name of a
bicyclist hit and killed Thursday night.
Police say 19-year-old Ziqi Zhang
died after she was hit by an SUV around 9:00 p.m. near the intersection of
State Road 933 and Saint Mary's Road, not far from Saint Mary's College.
Saint Joseph County Police believe
the Zhang may have tried to cross 933 while the SUV heading north on 933 had
the green light.
Officers say they found Zhang not
breathing and suffering from a severe head injury. She was pronounced dead
shortly after arriving at the hospital. Zhang is a sophomore at Saint Mary's
College from Jiangsu Province,
China. Saint
Mary's College says she was a dual degree engineering student majoring
in mathematics at Saint Mary's and taking engineering classes at the University
of Notre Dame.
"On
behalf of the entire Saint Mary's College community, I want to express our
shock and deep sorrow at the passing of Ziqi Zhang," Carol Ann Mooney,
president of Saint Mary's College, said in a statement. "We offer heartfelt
condolences to her parents and sister and our prayers are with them. Death is
never easy, especially when it is a young person with so much promise."
Saint
Mary's College says counseling will be available for students. They're planning
a memorial service for students on Tuesday.
The driver of the SUV was not hurt,
but was taken to the hospital for standard drug and alcohol tests.
Police say there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
State
Road 933 was closed for about 2 hours as investigators took measurements and
photos of the crash scene.
